Benin, Introduction

Benin, officially known as Republic of Benin, is a country in the west Afrca. It borders togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso and Niger to the north and Atlantic Ocean to the south. It looks like tree standing on Atlantic ocean.
After Independence it formed a democratic Govt. between 1960 to 1972, followed by a Marxist-Leninist regime between 1972 to 1991, which was highly repressive and led to economic collapse. Multiparty elections took place in 1991. Its main sources of income are subsistence agriculture and cotton.
It is one of the poorest country of the world leaving below the international poverty line i.e. 1.25 US$ per day per capita national average income.
Its rank from the top is 170 and from the bottom is 37.

Its National Average per capita income using Atlas method,2003 est., is 430$. In other metods,such as IMF,WB and CIA PPP(nominal), in 2007,2007 and 2008 est. respectively.
