Ghana,Intrduction


Ghana, officially known as the Republic of Ghana was named after the medieval Ghana Empire of West Africa .The actual name ofthe empire was Wagadugu. Ghana was the title of the kings who ruled the Kindom. It was controlled by Sundiata in 1240 AD, and absorbed into the larger mail Empire. (Mail Empire reached its peak of success under Mansa Musa around 1307.)
Geographically the old Ghana was 500 miles north of the present Ghana , and occupied the area between Rivers Senegal and Niger. Some inhabitants of present Ghana had ancestors linked with the medieval Ghana. The present Ghana borders Cote d'Ivoryto the west, Burkina Faso to the north,Togo to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the South. The word Ghana means "Warrior King" and was the source of the name Guinea, which had been used to refer to the west African coast.
Ghana was inhabitedin pre-colonial times by a number of ancient kingdoms, including the in land Empire of Ashanti and various fante states along the coast and inland.
It is one of the poorest country in Africa. Its rank from the bottom in the national average per capita income using aylas method , 2003 est. is 27th. and from the top is 179 with 330 $ as per capita income.
