First Government :
MacDonald took the charge of Foreign and the Prime Minister in Jan 1924and make it clear thathis main priority was to undo the damage which he believed had been caused by the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, by setting the reparations issue and coming to terms with Germany.
The Govt was only to last nine months and did not have a majority in either House of the Parliament. MacDonald took the decision to stop the constructional workon the Singapore military base in 1924despite strong opposition from the Admirality.MacDonald recognised and improved the relation with Soviet Union.
Second Government (1929-1931)
At the May 1929 election, Labour won 288 seats where as Conservatives won 260, with 59 Liberals under Lloyd Geeorge holding the balance of power. Baldwin resigned and MacDonald formed the minority Govt. with cordial relationship with george Lloyd.
