Rep. of the Congo or Congo leopoldville (1960-1964)

The agitation of Independence forced Brussels to grant freedomon June 30, 1960.Two prominent nationalists won : 1. Patrice Lumamba of the leftist Movement national Congolese, became the Prime Minister, 2. Joseph Kasavuba of the ABAKO became the Presient. But within weeks of Independence the Katanga Province, led byMoise Tshombe , seceded from the new republic and another mining province , South Kasai, followed. Moreover Kasavuba and Lumumba were at daggers drawn. As a reult UN was called for as a peace keeping force at the call of Lumumba.Kasavuba staged an army coup and handed over Lumumba to Katanga forces. Lumumba was killed by a Belgian mercinary in the presence of Tshombe. Involvement of US and Belgium was alleged after ivestigation by UN. An unrest took place Between Tshombe an Kasavuba till 1965 when Gen. Joseph Mobuu took the Presient's chair after a coup. He changed the country's name to Zaire and the name of his own to Mobutu Sese Seko, meaneng "all powerful warrior. He defeated the rebels with the help of France and Belgium."
