President Mobutu (1971- 1997)

Joseph Mobutu took over the charges after five years of instability and civil unrest replacing Kasavubu in a coup. He was supported by United States because he was anti-communist and could block the passage of Communist entry in Africa. Mobutu did all sorts of nuissances to deposit in his Swiss Bank account a sum of money worth $ 4 billion (USD). During 1970s and 1980s he was invited to visit US on several occasions by US President Nixon, Ronald Regan and Bush.
Mobutu was ousted by a seven-month guerrila movement headed by Laurent Kabila in May 1997.
